Red “bell” peppers are native to tropical America and have been growing for more than 9000 years in South and Central American civilizations. Introduced to Asia and Europe via Spanish & Portuguese explorers around 1493, since then new varieties are cultivated across the world. All of the bell pepper varieties start green and some turn to red or yellow when they ripen. Red Pepper are crunchy, juicy and averaging 7 cm length and 5 cm diameter with 3-4 lobes. They are available year-round, with a peak season in the late summer.
Peppers are filled with antioxidants, allies preventing aging of the skin, hair and nails, improving the immune system and fighting inflammation. Potassium, Calcium, Iron contained in peppers are also necessary for healthy bone, teeth, muscle and nerve functions. Finally, their dietary fibres slow the rate of sugar absorbed into the bloodstream.
