The Despagne family bought the vineyard in 1812. Currently, it is François Despagne who is in charge of policy. He belongs to the seventh generation. The terroir of 26.8 hectares is located in the hamlet of ‘Grand Corbin’ and has a soil of clay-sand’. Three quarters of the planting consists of merlot. In 2005, François Despagne started organic viticulture, with the aim of having a very pure expression of the merlot: aromatic, fresh, ripe rather than overripe and heavy.
In the 2019 Grand Corbin-Despagne, deep purple-black tones reveal vibrant aromas of plums, cherries, blueberry and mocha, accented by cedar, menthol, cloves, and pencil lead. The robust palate delivers a powerful punch, showcasing intense, ripe black fruits and a sturdy structure of grainy tannins. Balanced with ample freshness, the wine concludes with a lingering finish, where the subtle prominence of wood adds depth.
This wine complements dishes like pepper-crusted beef, veal, and lamb exceptionally well. If you’re serving cheese, opt for uncooked pressed varieties such as Gouda, Saint-Nectaire, Morbier, and Salers.
