Plums are among the earliest fruits domesticated by humans, with archaeological and historical evidence pointing to origins in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus Mountains and China. The d’Ente plum, also known as the Agen prune, traces its roots to the 12th–13th century when Benedictine monks of Clairac Abbey in the Lot Valley (Lot-et-Garonne, southwestern France) grafted local plum trees with Damas plums brought back from Syria by Crusaders, creating a new variety called “prune d’Ente” from the Old French word “enter,” meaning “to graft”
Renowned for its exceptional sweetness, rich flavor and suitability for sun-drying, the d’Ente plum became the basis of the world-famous Agen prune industry and was officially recognized by the European Union in 2002 with a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) that guarantees its unique quality and terroir-driven character
