Kalamata olives have been cultivated for over 3,000 years in the Messenia region of southern Greece, especially around the city of Kalamata, where this variety originated. Mentioned in ancient texts and prized through Byzantine and Ottoman times, these olives were once symbols of peace and prosperity. Grown exclusively in this sun-soaked region under strict PDO standards, Kalamata olives owe their distinctive flavour to mineral-rich soil, sea breezes, and traditional hand-harvesting methods passed down through generations. Revered across the Mediterranean, they are now one of Greece’s most iconic exports-and for good reason.
Deep purple with glossy skin and a firm bite, these unpitted olives offer a rich, fruity taste balanced by natural brininess. Their almond shape and meaty texture make them stand out in both appearance and taste.
They shine on appetizer boards, Greek salads, or stirred into braised chicken or focaccia. Pair with Pays d’Oc IGP Pinot Noir, Domaine Girard 2021—a southern French red featuring bright fruit and soft tannins that balance the olives’ saltiness. Its earthy notes and light body complement the richness of the olives, creating a delightful contrast.

1 review for Olive, Kalamata (Unpitted)
Nicolas Guyon –
I loved the firm, meaty bite of these glossy Kalamata olives, each one bursting with deep fruity richness and a touch of sea-salty brine that instantly whisked me away to sun-drenched Greek groves
