Melon, Charentais from France

The Charentais melon is one of France’s most iconic summer fruits. Despite its name, it is not exclusively produced in the Charente region: the term refers to a traditional type of cantaloupe first developed in the Charentes. Grown in the sun-drenched region of Camargue near the Vaccarès lagoon, this exceptional fruit thrives in rich, coastal soil where generous sunshine concentrates its natural sweetness and intense fragrance.

This beautifully round melon is recognised by its smooth, pale green skin, marked with fine dark-green vertical stripes that gradually become more pronounced as the fruit ripens. Beneath the delicate rind lies thick, bright orange flesh that is remarkably juicy, tender and aromatic, surrounding a central seed cavity filled with naturally sweet juices.

Its expressive fragrance reveals delicate floral notes, ripe fruit aromas and a subtle tropical character. On the palate, the Charentais melon is rich, refreshing and intensely sweet, with a smooth texture and a lingering honeyed finish. It is delicious served on its own, but also makes an elegant starter when paired with Bayonne or Serrano ham, creamy Brie de Meaux, Burrata or a mature French cheese.
