The ‘Patte-de-Loup’ apple, in English ‘Wolf’s Paw’, originated in the Loire Valley has been known since the Middle Ages. According to legends, it was the favourite apple variety of Anne de Bretagne, former Queen of France.
The Wolf’s Paw apple takes its name from the unique pattern on the fruit, looking like scars, as if a wolf had scratched it with its claws.
In addition, the apple has a rough skin of dark green colour, sometimes with small gray traces.
The crisp and juicy apple is very popular among fruits lovers for its sweet and slightly acidic taste. Well-appreciated baked, it is perfect for the delicious Tarte Tatin recipe .
