Asparagus is native to most of Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia. Historically it was found growing in coastal marine regions and prefers sandy weedless soils. This vegetable has been cultivated and eaten as a medicinal plant in Egypt for over 2,000 years.
Its deep pistachio-green stalks are tender at the tip and thick towards the end, and a slight purple blush often occurs around the stalk and the conical tip.
