Cheese Type: Uncooked, Unpressed soft cheese
Aged with calvados liquor and topped with breadcrumbs
The Normandy camembert owes its fame to the launch of the railway line linking Flers in Normandy to Paris, in 1867, and to the invention of its box in 1899, which facilitated transport to the United States, country in which this cheese was already very popular. It was also popularized during the first world war: in 1918, soldiers received huge quantities of camembert in the battlefields. Back from the front, they asked their grocer to order this cheese. This camembert is soaked with Calvados (an apple or pear brandy) and topped with breadcrumbs. The taste is deliciously fruity, with a fruit brandy sweetness that commands the remarkable arc of flavour.
