I’ve been trying all of the Joel Defrance wines that Cheese Club have brought to Hong Kong (thanks folks!), and there have been a couple of gems at very reasonable prices. But sadly this one doesn’t excite me.
There’s no vintage/base/disgorgement/dosage info on the label beyond it being “Brut”. On first opening the nose is very austere, and the palate is quite agressively gassy, very dry citrus, tending to bitter.
It improves somewhat with maybe an hour’s air, but the nose is stilled rather muted – perhaps some vanilla and chalky minerality can be teased out. The palate has really quite tart lemons, a drying mouthfeel, but feels very austere overall. The finish is quite long and drying and stays (just) on the right side of bitterness. The dosage appears to be in the extra brut part of brut.
I can see that this is a style that some might like, but, despite liking many extra bruts, I find this just too austere/light on fruit, and lacking complexity or even any refreshingness in the mouth.
