Round Red Eggplant from Italy is a striking heirloom variety prized for its perfectly spherical shape, glossy deep purple‑red skin and dense, creamy white flesh with very few seeds and minimal bitterness. Native to southern Italy and especially popular in Sicilian and Neapolitan cooking, this medium‑sized globe eggplant delivers a mild, sweet flavor and a tender yet meaty texture that absorbs sauces and seasonings beautifully without falling apart. Low in calories and naturally rich in fiber, potassium and antioxidant anthocyanins such as nasunin concentrated in its vivid skin, it supports heart health, digestion and overall wellness while adding dramatic color to the plate.
For a classic Italian preparation, slice the eggplant into 1 cm rounds, brush with olive oil and grill or roast at 200 °C (400 °F) until golden and tender; layer with ripe tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella or ricotta, basil and a pinch of sea salt, then bake until bubbly for an authentic eggplant Parmesan or stuffed round eggplant dish.
