Perfect to be eaten raw, in a salad in small pieces, or with goat cheese!
The fig is one of the first plants that was cultivated by humans with some fig fossils dating to about 9400-9200 BC found in Jordan. Native to the Middle East and western Asia, the fig has been cultivated since ancient times. Derived from the Latin word ficus, the term fig has a great importance in Mediterranean and Middle East cultures.
The edible fruit of the fig tree is an uncommon fruit due to its pear-shaped silhouette and its content made of many small one-seeded fruits called ‘’druplets’’. Black Breva figs from Spain are known to be rich in aroma, sweet and juicy. A tender, ripe black Breva fig is heavy, loaded with its own syrupy liqueur. They often crack upon ripeness exposing the purple-red pulp beneath the skin. Taste is all honey-like sweetness with a subtle hint of berry.
