Les Petits Fruits, nestled in Campan in the French Pyrenees, has been making jams the old-fashioned way since 1982—slow cooking fruit in small batches using traditional copper cauldrons. Their focus on local fruit and simple, time-honoured methods gives each jar a distinctly natural taste. The vine peach, or pêche de vigne, is a late-summer variety with deep red flesh and a bold, fragrant character. Historically planted between vineyard rows to help detect signs of mildew, these peaches are prized for their rich aroma and were once considered a farmer’s secret delicacy.
This jam has a dark rose-pink hue, with a slightly velvety texture and bits of tender peach throughout. It smells intensely fruity, almost like a ripe nectarine with a hint of red berries. The taste is full and slightly tangy, not too sweet, with just a touch of acidity that gives it depth. The texture is soft and slightly grainy from the fruit, which adds a satisfying mouthfeel. It spreads easily and brings a warm, summery burst to whatever you pair it with.
Try this jam with a slice of Ossau-Iraty, a firm sheep’s milk cheese from the same region. The gentle nuttiness and creamy texture of the cheese balance beautifully with the fruity sharpness of the peach. Perfect on a fresh baguette, in a crêpe, or even spooned over soft cheese as a starter or light dessert.
