Livarot is one of the oldest cheeses from Normandy. It takes its name from the village of Livarot where it was first produced. In the 19th century, it was the most popular cheese in Normandy and was dubbed “the poor man’s meat” due to its highly nutritious qualities. The AOC Livarot is washed with brine and annato which gives it its orange colour. Its paste is soft, springy with some little holes, the smell is intense, spicy and the cheese has some citrusy notes, nutty and rustic taste.
Wine Pairing:
Red wines (Chambertin)
White wines (Gewurztraminer)
Ciders (cider brandy from Normandy)
