Some elders in the Nord Pas de Calais region have a tradition of dipping this cheese in coffee for breakfast!
Maroilles, hailed as the King of cheese from northern France, holds a rich history as one of the oldest known cheeses. The tale dates to 960 when the monks of Abbaye of Maroilles crafted a cheese known as ‘Craquegnon’. However, a twist of fate occurred when the bishop of Cambrai accidentally left the cheese in the maturation room for an extended period. This resulted in a distinct change in taste and texture, leading to the cheese being renamed as Maroilles. Thus, the iconic Maroilles cheese was born, carrying with it a legacy of tradition and flavour.
Easily recognizable by its square shape of 13 cm and its 6 cm of high, Maroilles AOP is made with raw cow’s milk and its rind washed daily, creating its pungent typical smell. In the mouth, it is sweet and strong at the same time, milky and hearthy with a creamy texture.

1 review for Maroilles Fermier
Paul C –
This is a rather nice cheese – the strong aroma complements the rather smooth creamy paste, the overall effect working well with a glass of crisp white wine.
