Ouzo is one of Greece’s most iconic spirits, with deep roots in the country’s culinary and cultural traditions. Officially recognized as a Greek product with a protected designation of origin (PDO), ouzo has been distilled for centuries, though modern production began in the 19th century. The village of Plomari on the island of Lesbos is especially renowned for its ouzo and remains the heart of its production, recognized as one of the most respected centers of this craft.
Plomari Ouzo is made from a meticulous blend of anise and other Mediterranean herbs and spices, slowly distilled in copper stills. The result is a crystal-clear spirit that turns a cloudy white when mixed with water—a traditional way to enjoy it. It opens with a bold anise aroma, followed by a complex yet smooth taste that’s both sweet and spicy, with a lingering herbal finish.
Ouzo is best served chilled, typically with a splash of water or a few ice cubes. It’s traditionally enjoyed alongside small plates—think grilled octopus, fried anchovies, or fresh feta with olive oil.
