Comice pears or ”Christmas pears” were first cultivated in the in the middle of the 19th Century near Angers, France. Formally know under the name of ”Doyenné du Comice”, this variety of pear may be small in size, but it is not short on aroma. Comice pear are green with red stripes, they are considered to be among the sweetest and juiciest of all pear varieties. It is also an excellent pear to poach.
