Wine Enthusiast: 89/100
Located at the southern tip of Burgundy’s wine-producing region, the famous Château de Varennes stands in Quincie en Beaujolais, just north of Lyon. This 11th-century castle has seen varied fortunes, from modest beginnings under the Villion family in the 13th century to a period of grandeur during the Lords of Beaujeu in the 14th century. Since 1809, the Charveriat family has owned and cultivated the estate’s vineyards. In line with the Beaujolais region, the Gamay grape thrives here, particularly in granite and silica-based terroirs, showcasing its subtle expressions.
Made from grapes produced by vines averaging 75 years old, this powerful fruity and smooth Beaujolais Village features a deep red rubis dress. Its floral (peonie, violet) and fresh red fruits (raspberry, blackcurrent) nose opens on a sweet palate with intense notes of morello cherries and dark berries on smooth and light tannins. A well balanced Beaujolais!
This wine pairs very well with cold cuts, Italian cuisine, or savoury tarts.
