1 review for Champagne AOC, Les Riceys Brut, Joel Defrance, 2017
Paul C –
I’ve had several of these over the last 3 years… Obviously 2017 was a very weak vintage for champagne, but this is still a drinkable everyday fizz for the Wine Fair price.
There’s essentially no information about the blend, vinification or dosage on either the bottle or the website. Surprisingly I just noticed that the cork is inscribed with “2018”, which is odd because that’s neither the vintage of the wine nor the disgorgement/corking year (since all vintage champagne must spend 36 months minimum before disgorgment).
Anyway the blend seems chardonnay-heavy, perhaps with some other varieties (the producer website notes that they have access to arbanne, pinot blanc and pinot gris, as well as chardonnay and pinot noir). With some air the nose offers some citrus and some minerality (iodine?). The palate is quite rounded, a little creamy, some citrus, some white stone fruit; well balanced acidity/dosage. The finish is quite full and long without being cloying.
Overall this is a wine that really works best with food, and then it’s a very quaffable all-rounder. Not particularly complex, but fine for the price as an everyday wine.
